Falling down is never easy, especially when it happens unexpectedly and leaves you with more than just bruises. Recently, I experienced a moment that many mothers might relate to—a literal fall, face down in the dirt. It was painful, embarrassing, and a sharp reminder of how fragile we can be. But more than the physical hurt, it sparked a deeper reflection on the importance of self-care and compassion, especially for mothers who often put everyone else first.
The Moment of Impact and What It Taught Me
The fall happened on a busy afternoon. I was rushing between tasks, juggling the needs of my household, clients, prepping meals, and lack of sleep. In a split second, I tripped and landed face down in the dirt when my golden retriever saw bunnies and other doggies. The shock of the fall was painful, but what stayed with me longer was the sudden pause it forced in my day as it forced me to practice even more what I preach to others.
That moment of stillness made me realize how often I neglect even myself. As mothers, we tend to push through exhaustion and discomfort, believing that our needs come last. But falling down, literally and figuratively, reminds us that self-care is not a luxury—it’s a necessity.
Why Self-Care Matters for Mothers
Physical health: Taking time to rest and heal prevents small injuries or stress from becoming chronic problems.
Mental clarity: Quiet moments help clear the mind, reduce anxiety, and improve decision-making.
Emotional balance: Compassion towards ourselves fosters resilience and patience, essential qualities in motherhood.
Role modeling: Demonstrating self-care teaches children the importance of looking after their own well-being.
Mini Moments of Self-Care That Make a Difference
After my falls (yes on each year for the past 3 years), I started intentionally carving out small pockets of time for myself throughout the day. These mini moments don’t require hours or special equipment—just a conscious choice to pause and recharge.
Five minutes of deep breathing: Sitting quietly, focusing on breath, helps calm the nervous system.
A short walk outside: Fresh air and nature can lift mood and clear the mind.
Mindful sipping of tea or coffee: Paying attention to the taste and warmth grounds you in the present.
Journaling a few thoughts: Writing down feelings or gratitude can shift perspective and reduce stress.
Gentle stretching: Loosens tension and reconnects you with your body.
These simple practices became anchors in my day, especially on the tougher ones when the demands felt overwhelming.

Compassion Toward Yourself and Others
The fall also highlighted how important compassion is—not just for others, but for ourselves. Mothers often carry a heavy weight of expectations, feeling guilty for taking breaks or asking for help. But self-compassion means recognizing that we are human, prone to mistakes and fatigue, and that’s okay.
Practicing compassion can look like:
Speaking kindly to yourself when things don’t go as planned.
Allowing space for rest without guilt or judgment.
Accepting help from family or friends without feeling weak.
Celebrating small victories instead of focusing on shortcomings.
This mindset shift transforms how we experience motherhood. It turns challenges into opportunities for growth and connection rather than sources of stress.
Creating Quiet Spaces for Reflection
In the times of unexpected injuries when life take you off course and I love being a mother and all of the wonders and joys of motherhood, finding quiet time can sometimes feel impossible. Yet, these moments are vital for reflection and renewal. After my fall, I made a habit of seeking out or creating small quiet spaces—whether a corner of a room, a bench in the park, or even a few minutes in the car before the next errand.
Quiet reflection helps:
Process emotions and experiences
Gain perspective on daily challenges
Set intentions for the day or week
Reconnect with personal values and goals
Even brief pauses can recharge emotional batteries and improve overall well-being.

Encouraging Other Mothers to Pause and Care for Themselves
Motherhood is a shared journey filled with ups and downs. My experience falling face down in the dirt is a reminder that none of us are invincible. It’s a call to all mothers to honor their own needs with kindness and patience.
If you are a mother feeling overwhelmed, consider these steps:
Recognize your limits and give yourself permission to rest.
Build mini self-care moments into your daily routine.
Practice self-compassion as you would for a close friend.
Seek support when needed, knowing it strengthens you, not weakens you.
Create quiet spaces for reflection and emotional renewal.
These small but powerful actions can transform how you experience motherhood, making it more joyful and sustainable.
For this Mother's Day and everyday I wish you to take mini moments of reprive to recharge your batteries and reach out for a bit of extra supports to help you get back to you again.
